Chronic Pain Treatment
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than a few months. It impairs sleep and physical activity, causes anxiety and depression, and impairs your ability to live a normal life. Chronic pain causes an imprint in the brain, and LORETA neurofeedback achieves excellent results, even in treating pain that has no cause.
Cause:
Chronic pain causes an imprint in the sensorimotor and other associated areas of your brain. This imprint continues to produce the sensation of pain as perceived by your brain even when there is nothing causing the pain in your body.
Treatment:
LORETA treats the brain areas that are abnormal and are causing the pain, usually with excellent results. An exception is pain from an ongoing cause (such as acute arthritis), which will not be helped by treating your brain.
Specifics:
If the pain is caused by a traumatic disease, that disease may also require treatment before the pain will diminish. Pain with an ongoing cause, such as arthritis, will return, even if the pain is decreased by LORETA.
By reducing chronic pain, LORETA neurofeedback can help you distinguish between that chronic “brain pain” and acute “body pain.”
Causing normal sensation in the areas of the body in which the pain is felt, like softly brushing the skin, may also help reduce chronic pain. For example, this is useful in chronic pain due to shingles or nerve trauma.
Preparation:
Please read the section on “how to prepare for your session”. Your hair must be clean and dry. You must remove everything you can from your head and neck and preferably clothes and other parts of your body.
