What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback (NF)

Neurofeedback is operant conditioning (biofeedback) using your brain waves.

LORETA Z Score Neurofeedback

LORETA (Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography) z score (comparing your brain waves to a healthy population of your age and gender) neurofeedback is operant conditioning of your brain in 3 dimensions using the difference between your brain waves and those of normals (people who had EEG tracings who had no psychological or psychiatric complaints or disorders).

  1.  Your brain waves (EEG signals) are recorded.
  2. The areas of the brain to be treated are chosen based on your problems, history, symptoms, signs, your baseline EEG, computer analysis of the EEG using Neuroguide and Loreta Progress Report and your previous response to treatment.
  3. Your brain waves learn to be more normal by rewarding you when they are more normal.  You see images and hear sounds that when you normalize your brain waves. In this way, your brain waves “learn to be more normal”.
  4. This can reduce symptoms like depression, anxiety or fear and help treat conditions like anorexia nervosa, chronic pain, or ADHD.

  • Loreta NF requires a cap with 19 electrodes that is applied at each session.
  • Z scoring means your brain waves are scored or compared against age-matched controls to show whether they are normal or abnormal.
  • LORETA scanning provides an estimate of the location and function of the deep brain regions like the anterior cingulate, insula and fusiform gyrus. It produces a three-dimensional image of the brain that corresponds to and looks like the images in fMRI.  LORETA scan is better at time resolution but worse at location resolution than fMRI.
